"The Four Star" January/February Edition No. 1 - 10
Commander's Message
Our Children's Party on December 16th was a great event as always. Thanks to all who helped with the outstanding job putting on this annual "fun filled" event. The current financial difficulties facing our Nation, State, and Post continues. We are still maintaining our Post activities, and donations to our community, but we still face financial shortages. It is our hope that our situation will improve this year and that our members will understand, cooperate, and assist in our efforts. Once again, any ideas that you have that will assist us to increasing the revenues of our Post should be written down and placed in the suggestion box. If you have any questions regarding our current financial situation, please don't hesitate to call me and I'll do my best to explain our Post's situation to you. This is your Post, and all members have the right to know the current status of our operation, and also the responsibility to assist us in maintaining the "Best That We Can Be" organization. We need your help and support to make it through these difficult times and I know that with your help we will be successful in this endeavor. Finally, I want to thank our Legion members (and you know who you are), our Ladies Auxiliary, and our Sons of the American Legion members for their continuing support of the Post. Your labors and all your contributions in helping to keep keep our Post in operation are greatly appreciated. "Kudos" !!! Also don't forget about our New Years Eve Dance, on December 31st of course. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas, and a safe and prosperous New Year. E. Glenn Butler Commander Post 217 "True friends are the ones who never leave your heart, even if they leave your your life for a while. Even after years apart, you pick up with them right where you left off, and even if they die, they're never dead on your heart"

Unit 217 President's Message - Happy New Year! It is my hope that each of you has had a year filled with peace, joy, health, and prosperity. November and December were very busy months for your Auxiliary. On November 14th, we hosted our annual Youth Recognition Awards Day. We honored 46 youths! Awards were given to our Americanism winners, Military and Scholastic Excellence winners, Girls and Boys State participants, Miss College Park, and two Eagle Scouts. This year we dedicated the Awards Ceremony to Pearl Weidner, who was instrumental in starting these awards many years ago. As always, my heartfelt thanks to all those who show up every time that I have a need, and help with every detail, from start to finish. The Auxiliary could not do all that it does without the help of each and everyone of you. Also, on November 24th, we hosted an additional Recreation Hall Party at the Washington VA Hospital. I'd like to thank Angie for making the arrangements for the Auxiliary to pick up another party solely for the purpose of getting more "new" people involved. Those in attendance were: Howard Mays, Jodi Columbo, Whitney Columbo, Angie Rodriguez, Miss College Park Elise Pittman, Lauren, Pam, Leah and Ed Koslosky, Caroline Kuhlman, and myself. Most of the participants were titleholders, and it was very nice to have so many young people show up with an interest in our veterans. A wonderful time was had by all.
We have been fortunate to have some really good Sunday dinners. If you have not had the opportunity to come by on a Sunday, I highly recommend it. On December 13th we hosted the children's Christmas Party. Santa, pizza, and presents, what more could a child ask for! Our next Auxiliary meeting will be on January 5th, from 7 PM until 8 PM, please come by, and "Keep Smiling". Dianna Nix Unit 217 President

S.A.L. Commanders Message It as been brought to my attention over the previous months, that we, as a Squadron, may have forgotten the purpose for our continued membership and service. I am sure many of us may not be aware of the agenda of the S.A.L. Please take a moment to read the following preamble, and to know that this is our only mission, as stated. We need to give this agenda our collective priority and leave all others at the door. Preamble to the S.A.L. National ConstitutionProud possessors of a priceless heritage, we male descendants of veterans of the Great Wars, associate ourselves together as "Sons of The American Legion" for the following purposes:To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a true spirit of Americanism; to preserve the memories of our former members and the associations of our members and our forefathers in the Great Wars; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and masses; to make right the master of might; to promote peace and good will on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy; to consecrate and sanctify our friendship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness; to adopt in letter and spirit all of the great principles for which The American Legion stands; and to assist in carrying on for God and Country.
The Sons of the American Legion was created in 1932 as an organization program within the American Legion. The S.A.L. is made up of boys and men of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the United States military and became eligible for membership in the American Legion. Together, with the members of the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Sons of the American Legion, we make up what is known as the Legion Family. All three organizations place high importance on preserving our American traditions and values, and also improving the quality of life for our nations children, caring for the veterans and their families, and perhaps most importantly, teaching the fundamentals of good citizenship. I'd like to thank the Post, Unit, and SAL members that showed up to rake the "mountains of leaves" at the Post. The conditions were less than perfect, but the job was accomplished in short order. So "Thanks" to Beth Debosky, Clancy Frampton, J.R. Frank, Kenny Lawn, Howard Mays, Trip McNaught, Mike O'Connor, Joe Raphel and Dave Regalme. Robert Sheperd S.A.L. Commander
