"The Four Star"

 March/April

Edition No. 2 - 10

Commander's Message

Hopefully everyone made it through our record snowfall events for 2010 with not a lot of problems or damage. We were closed for the week, but are now back to full operation.

A meeting with the Executive Board, House Committee, Auxiliary and our Sons of the American Legion was held on January 20th at 7:00 PM. The reason for this meeting was to discuss the operational issues that the Post is currently dealing with and to bring in additional membership and revenue. Many thanks to all that attended for your input and recommendations. Look for more information for upcoming events in the Four Star, and on our website, or our Facebook page.

We have had several members who transferred to the Post everlasting since the beginning of 2010. Please keep their families in your thoughts and prayers.

1st Vice Commanders Message

Hi all, What about all that snow (smile). Not much to say, a lot of things got cancelled last 2 months, but karaoke is starting to pick up. In case you didn't know, we are doing karaoke one Saturday a month at the Post. So come on out and support the Post and have a good time. Sometime this Summer look forward to a contest for "Best Singer". I'm proud to be a member in the Best American Legion Post in Maryland.

Legion Membership Report

Welcome new members. 2010 renewals processed to date is about 321 and we are looking good for "3 Star". If you have not renewed yet, technically you're not a member anymore and your blue card will not work anymore. Let's renew now, not later. PUFL, Paid-Up-For-Life, is still an option. Thanks for your support.

Unit 217 President's Message

Happy Winter! I do believe there is such a thing as too much snow, and we've hit that point. I hope that all of you are well and managing. Your Auxiliary's been busy over the past two months. The Chili Cook-Off was a great success, and our Children's Christmas party was also another Outstanding event, as we hosted over 60 children at this event! The Auxiliary had another very successful Spaghetti Dinner, even with all the snow. We would also like to send our congratulations to Elise Pittman on her year as Miss College Park. She was a wonderful representative for not only College Park, but also for our American Legion Post 217, and we all appreciate what she has done for us. I'd like to remind everyone of the up-coming Children's Easter Party on March 28th. Everyone should put on their "bunny ears" and come on out for our Easter Egg Hunt at the Post and bring all your friends, because it's always a great time.

Here's a list of some more events to keep in mind:

February 20th - Bull and Oyster Roast at the Elk's Lodge

February 21st - Sunday Diner at the Post

March 21st - Sunday Diner at the Post

May 1st - Coach Bingo in the Legion Hall - more info to come

Unit 217 Membership Report

Our Department and National organizations give us six months to pay our current years dues before we are declared delinquent. We 167 members who have met those guidelines. Where are the rest of you? If you don't have your dues in to the Unit before the middle of March, you will not have a card with your years o consecutive membership printed on it, and if you have not paid for the past two years, you will be dropped entirely. That is a shame as this is a great organization to belong to and affords us many benefits. You have had two reminders from National and many reminders from this chairman, that your dues should be paid as early in the year as possible. This year the American Legion Auxiliary is changing the way they record our membership and this means that from March until May, there will be little done on the Department level. Everything is starting to become computerized. I strongly urge you, if you have not paid your dues as of this date, and to remedy this oversight before March 15th. You may not be able to find your computer generated dues notice, that's okay. Just send in your check for $20 made out to College Park Unit 217, address it to me in care of the address on this 4-star newsletter. Include your membership number on your check, and I will take it from there.

We have a few new members and several potential new members, both Junior and Senior that will be voted on in March. We also have a Junior member who is graduating to Senior as she has reached the age of 18. We hope to have a graduation service for her, If there are any other Juniors reaching their 18th birthday before July, we would like like to include you in this ceremony. Please call or write and let us know.

I know the blizzards have messed up many things for our members, including the cancellation of meetings, the annual Day for God and Country service, and a lot of other important events. We hope our members are well and suffered no mishaps due to the record breaking snowfalls and severe winds. On the bright side, Spring is fast approaching and can't get here soon enough for me. By the way, do you have a blank membership Application in your pocket or purse so you can be ready when you meet that potential member?

Yours in service, not self,

Ivy Christoffers, Membership Chair
