"The Four Star" Edition No. 3B - 07 May - June 2007 Commander's
Corner
The
membership of your Post now exceeds 400 members. This is the first time in three
years that we have reached this plateau. Last year you were at the 392
membership level. This is only a 2% increase, but at least it’s progress. I
thank all of you for your renewals and for your recruiting efforts. In
particular, we all need to thank Bill Bladen, Chuck McDonald, Bill Robertson,
and Fred Schaffer. Most
of you know that our Post Home is owned by a separate corporation. That
corporation is “Legion Home, Inc.” All members of the Post own one share of
“Legion Home, Inc.” Therefore, at present, there are 400 shares. Your
Post Home needs a new roof, and we’ve received 5 estimates from 4 different
companies. They vary from $24,000 to $
106,00. This is a big spread. Some of the estimates call for different types of
roof coverings and other work. Therefore the differences in the estimates is
not as great as it
seems. Legion Home Inc. and Post 217 are working together to find the best deal
on a new roof. I will keep you posted. Tom Davis (Post 217 Commander) Chaplain's Corner
I
am hoping that everyone had an enjoyable and spirit filled Easter. Our thoughts
and prayers go out to the family of Howard Lithe, a College Park resident and a
member of our Post. Brother Little went on to Post Everlasting on March 21st at
the age of 83, as did Walter Badders on April 13th. Walter was the father of our
past Chaplain Ray Badders, a WWII vet who was in the 29th Division who went
ashore at Normandy on D-Day plus 1. He was a PUFL member of our Post and will be
be missed by all who knew him. For God and County Ron Gray (Chaplain) 240-486-0910

On-Line Military veterans and the next-of-kin of deceased former military members may now use a new on-line “National Personnel Records Center” system to request documents. Other individuals must still complete the Standard Form 180, which can be downloaded from the internet. Both are available at - - - http://vetrecs.archives.gov This new system provides a portal to obtain discharge documents.
Unit 217 President's Message
Our Spaghetti Dinner was very successful. We had a big crowd, we made some
money, and the food was delicious, and we had great time with all our friends. I
would like to thank all the “Friday Nighter's” who come to listen to the
bands. They all come early to have dinner with us. Thanks for your support. Also
thanks to everyone for the help setting up all the tables and getting it all
ready. The “Bake Table” had a lot of goodies on it. If you didn't get any,
you missed out! The year is almost over and it’s election time again. If you would like to run for an office, see Helen Condatore. If you’re going to the annual Convention in July, think about becoming a delegate. Sarah Brown (Unit President) Unit
217 Membership Ladies, as I have been saying all year, “Let’s reach for the stars!” Well we’ve reached the stars, and we didn't stop there, we went beyond. We made goal plus 7, that’s the first time the Auxiliary has done this! Thanks to all the ladies who helped out with this membership drive. That just goes to show that if we all work as a Unit, we can accomplish wonders. Sarah
Brown (Auxiliary Membership) Auxiliary Chaplain I regret to report that member Honor Horman has lost her sister and best friend, Mary. Our thoughts are with her. Also, Pat Parker will be having some more work done at the hospital, as will Ivy Christoffers. I hope all goes well with them both so they can enjoy the Spring Season, (If it ever warms up again).
Here’s a thought for the coming “Birds and Flowers” months: “So
long as we love, we serve. So long as we are loved by others we are
indispensable; and no man is useless while he has a friend.” - Robert Louis
Stevenson Call or get together with your friends, maybe come to the Friday night dinners at the Post Home or come to the meeting nights. I’ll see you there, I hope. Mary Keller (Unit Chaplain)
************** Unit 217 Spaghetti Dinner The Auxiliary will be having a “Spaghetti Dinner” and “Bake Sale” on Friday June 29th, 2007 from 5:30 to 730 .Tickets will cost $7.00 for adults, and $4.00 for children under 12.
